1. In 1923, the first radio broadcast in Omaha took place on December 5. The station was called WAAW and was run by the Weathervane department store.

2. On December 5, 1965, the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers won their first Orange Bowl game in Miami, Florida. They defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide 39-28.

3. The Nebraska State Capitol building was completed on December 5, 1932, after a construction period of 10 years. The building is a popular tourist attraction and is considered one of the most beautiful capitol buildings in the United States.

4. The Nebraska Department of Roads unveiled a new electronic message board on December 5, 2003. The board is on I-80 and is used to keep drivers up to date on weather and road conditions.

5. The 12-story Burlington Tower building in Omaha was completed on December 5, 1985. It is currently the tallest building in Nebraska outside of Omaha and Lincoln.
