1. On December 9, 1861, the first issue of the Oregon Sentinel was published in Jacksonville, becoming the first newspaper in southern Oregon. The paper was established by Henry Klippel and Geo. H. Himes.

2. In 1905, on December 9, the inaugural meeting of the Oregon Federation of Women's Clubs was held in Portland. The organization advocated for women's suffrage, education, and civic service.

3. On December 9, 1914, the Portland Rose Festival Association was formed with the goal of promoting tourism and the rose industry in Portland. The first Rose Festival was held in 1907 and has since become an annual tradition.

4. The Oregon State Capitol building in Salem was dedicated on December 9, 1938. The building, which was designed in an Art Deco style, features a rotunda with a dome that is topped by a gold-leaf statue of a pioneer.

5. On December 9, 1975, the Portland Trail Blazers played their first game in the newly built Memorial Coliseum. The team defeated the Atlanta Hawks 121-109. The arena is now called Veterans Memorial Coliseum and is used for concerts and other events.
