2. On February 1, 1913, the city of Wilmington opened its first public library, which was located on 10th and Market streets. Today, the Wilmington Public Library system serves over 70,000 residents in the city and surrounding areas.

3. February 1, 1937, marked the founding of the Delaware River and Bay Authority, which oversaw the construction of the Delaware Memorial Bridge, a major transportation link between Delaware and New Jersey.

4. In 1951, the town of Newark, Delaware, became the site of one of the first suburban shopping centers in the United States, known as the Newark Shopping Center. The center was a model for other shopping centers in the following decades.

5. February 1, 2004, was a historic day for the state of Delaware, as it was the first time in over 50 years that a professional sports team played in the state. The Delaware Swarm, a professional lacrosse team, played their first game at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark.
