1. In 1918, the deadliest flu pandemic in history, the Spanish flu, reached Michigan. It ultimately claimed thousands of lives in the state and caused widespread panic and concern.

2. On February 1, 1960, the University of Michigan's basketball team, the Wolverines, played their first game at the newly-built Crisler Arena. The Wolverines defeated Northwestern University 83-71.

3. In 2002, the Winter Olympics torch relay passed through Michigan on its way to Salt Lake City, Utah. The torch was carried by local athletes and celebrities, including musician Kid Rock.

4. February 1, 2003, marked a tragic day in Michigan history as the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. One of the crew members was Michigan native Michael P. Anderson.

5. On February 1, 2019, Michigan made history by becoming the first state in the Midwest to legalize recreational marijuana. The law went into effect later that year, allowing adults over the age of 21 to possess and use up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana.
