1. In 1901, the Montana State Capitol building was completed in Helena after four years of construction. The Capitol, which is still in use today, is one of the most notable buildings in the state and features a copper dome that is second in size only to the United States Capitol.

2. On February 1, 1945, a plane carrying six men, including five servicemen from Montana, crashed in the mountains near Bozeman. The men were on a mission to transport a secret electronic device from California to New York. The cause of the crash is still unknown, and the wreckage was not discovered until 1997.

3. In 1977, the Montana Supreme Court ruled that the state's death penalty was unconstitutional. The decision came in response to a case involving a man who had been convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Montana did not reinstate the death penalty until 1997.

4. On February 1, 1870, the first issue of the Bozeman Avant Courier was published. The newspaper, which later became the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, is still in circulation and has won numerous awards for journalism and reporting.

5. In 1982, Butte-based engineer Richard Day developed the first computer program for the identification of landforms from satellite imagery. The program, called "LANDSATTOPO," revolutionized the field of remote sensing and made it possible to analyze large areas of land quickly and accurately.
