1. In 1837, Missouri's first state capitol building was destroyed by fire. The building known as the First Missouri State Capitol was the official seat of government in Missouri until 1826 when the capital was moved to Jefferson City. The fire caused extensive damage to the building and left only the exterior walls standing.

3. In 1870, the first African-American policeman was appointed in St. Louis, Missouri. Thomas F. Hart was appointed as a police officer in St. Louis and later became a detective. He was well-respected by his colleagues and his death was mourned by the entire St. Louis community.

4. The first successful parachute jump in the United States was made in St. Louis on February 10, 1912. The jump was made by a parachute inventor named Albert Berry, who leaped from a biplane at an altitude of 1,500 feet. Berry's jump was a major breakthrough in the development of the parachute.

5. On February 10, 1940, Missouri Senator Harry S. Truman was appointed as Chairman of the Senate Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program. Truman had gained a reputation as a hard-working and diligent senator and was chosen to lead the committee that would investigate allegations of waste and fraud in the nation's defense program. This appointment helped launch Truman's political career, and he would later become the 33rd President of the United States.
