2. In 1859, the Oregon Constitutional Convention began in Salem. This convention was tasked with drafting a constitution for the proposed state of Oregon, which would be admitted to the Union later that year.
3. In 1918, Oregon Governor James Withycombe died suddenly while in office. Withycombe was the first Oregon governor to die while in office, and his death prompted the state legislature to pass a law requiring a lieutenant governor to be elected alongside the governor, in order to ensure continuity of leadership.
4. In 1954, the United States Army Corps of Engineers began construction of The Dalles Dam on the Columbia River. The dam, which was completed in 1957, was one of several built on the Columbia River during this time period as part of the federal government's post-World War II plan to improve the nation's infrastructure and promote economic development.
5. In 1992, a winter storm descended on the Pacific Northwest, dumping nearly 20 inches of snow on Portland and causing widespread power outages throughout the region. The storm, which became known as the "Snowpocalypse," caused significant damage to homes and businesses, and resulted in at least eight deaths.
