Originally known as the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, it was later renamed Brown University in honor of Nicholas Brown, Jr., a prominent American philanthropist.

3) On February 11, 1784, the General Assembly of Rhode Island passed an act abolishing slavery in the state. Rhode Island was the first state in the United States to take this step.

4) In 1929, Rhode Island's current state flag was officially adopted. The flag features an anchor and the word "Hope," which is the state motto. The anchor represents Rhode Island's maritime history, and the word "Hope" represents the state's hope for the future.

5) On February 11, 1994, a major snowstorm hit Rhode Island, causing widespread power outages and disrupting transportation throughout the state. The storm, which became known as the "Storm of the Century," dumped over two feet of snow in some areas and resulted in at least seven deaths.
