1. In 1855, the Michigan State Capitol building became the first capitol in the United States to be lit with electric lights. This was a major milestone in the use of electricity and set a precedent for future buildings.

4. In 1947, the Michigan State Police launched their first helicopter program. The helicopter was a Bell 47 and was used primarily for search and rescue operations.

5. On February 12, 1975, the Great Lakes Blizzard of 1975 began. The blizzard lasted for several days and resulted in over $1 billion in damages and 20 deaths. The storm was also responsible for the sinking of the freighter SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which took the lives of all 29 crew members on board.
