1. On February 13, 1867, Henrietta Wyatt was the first woman to receive a bachelor's degree in medicine in the United States. She was born in Illinois and attended the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania. After her graduation, she returned to her hometown of Centralia, Illinois, where she practiced medicine for over 50 years.

2. In 1902, the world's first theatre built exclusively for movies opened in Los Angeles. The Kinetoscope Parlour was the first commercial movie theater in the world and showed short films to audiences for a fee. It was the brainchild of John P. Harris, who was born in Illinois on February 13, 1865.

3. On February 13, 1916, the famous racehorse Citation was born on a farm in Kentucky. Citation was bred and raised in Illinois before becoming one of the most successful thoroughbred racehorses of all time. He won 16 consecutive races and was the first horse to win over $1 million in prize money.

4. In 1920, the Chicago Black Sox baseball scandal was exposed. Eight players including "Shoeless" Joe Jackson were accused of intentionally losing the 1919 World Series for money. The scandal rocked the baseball world and led to the establishment of a commissioner to oversee the sport. The scandal came to light on February 13, 1920.

5. On February 13, 1980, the United States men's ice hockey team defeated the Soviet Union team in what is known as the "Miracle on Ice." The team was composed mainly of amateur and collegiate players and was not expected to win against the experienced Soviet team. However, they pulled off a stunning 4-3 victory, which is still considered one of the greatest upsets in sports history. The game took place during the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, but several members of the team were from Illinois.
