1. In 1877, a group of Nez Perce people led by Chief Joseph crossed into Montana from Idaho, beginning their famous flight from the U.S. Army in what became known as the Nez Perce War.

2. In 1933, the Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge suffered a disastrous fire that destroyed several cell blocks, killing 11 inmates and injuring dozens more.

3. In 1964, the Montana State Capitol building in Helena was designated a National Historic Landmark in recognition of its significance as an example of classical revival architecture and its role in state government.

4. In 1988, a major snowstorm hit much of Montana, causing travel disruptions, school closures, and power outages throughout the state.

5. In 2018, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that the Yellowstone grizzly bear population, which includes parts of Montana, had recovered sufficiently to be removed from the endangered species list, marking a major milestone in wildlife conservation.
