1. In 1732, the first recorded birth in the town of Stamford was that of Deborah Hoyt. Stamford was first settled by European settlers in 1641 and was incorporated as a town in 1642.
2. In 1779, General Israel Putnam, a prominent military figure in the American Revolutionary War, died in Brooklyn, Connecticut. Putnam was known for his bravery and leadership during the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Battle of Saratoga.
3. In 1844, the Connecticut State Capitol building was dedicated in Hartford. The building was designed by prominent architect Richard Upjohn and features a distinctive gold-gilded dome.
4. In 1926, the notorious gangster Al Capone was acquitted of charges related to a shooting at his headquarters in Cicero, Illinois. Capone reportedly had connections to bootlegging and organized crime in Connecticut and other parts of New England.
5. In 1965, the University of Connecticut men's basketball team played its first game at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in Storrs. The Pavilion is now home to the UConn women's basketball team, which has won multiple national championships under coach Geno Auriemma.
