4. In 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred in California. The shuttle exploded shortly after takeoff from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, killing all seven crew members on board. Among the crew was Ellison Onizuka, the first Asian-American astronaut.

5. In 2013, the 85th Academy Awards ceremony was held in California. The ceremony was held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and was hosted by Seth MacFarlane. The movie "Argo" won the Best Picture award.
