1. On February 26, 1862, the Battle of Nashville in Tennessee ended with a victory for the Union army under the leadership of General Ulysses S. Grant. Many soldiers from Alabama fought in this battle as members of the Confederate army, but were ultimately defeated.

2. In 1919, the first air mail route in Alabama was established between Montgomery and Atlanta. The service was operated by the newly formed U.S. Postal Service and used a de Havilland DH-4 airplane to transport mail.

3. On February 26, 1931, the Scottsboro Boys trial began in Scottsboro, Alabama. The case involved nine black teenagers who were accused of raping two white women on a train. The trial became a symbol of racial injustice and the inequities of the criminal justice system in the United States.

4. The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) was established on February 26, 1969, as an extension of the University of Alabama. Today, UAB is a nationally recognized leader in medical research and healthcare education.

On February 26, 2003, Alabama Governor Bob Riley announced a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for a series of church arsons that had occurred in the state over the previous few months. The reward eventually led to the arrest and conviction of three men who were responsible for the crimes.
