1. In 1872, a devastating fire broke out in the city of St. Paul, Minnesota, destroying more than 12 city blocks and 50 buildings. The fire started in a dry goods store on the corner of 3rd and Cedar, and quickly spread due to strong winds and low water supply.
2. On February 27, 1986, the Minnesota Timberwolves played their first game as an NBA franchise, losing to the Seattle SuperSonics 106-94. The Timberwolves had been awarded an expansion team the previous year, and played their first season at the Metrodome before moving to Target Center in downtown Minneapolis.

4. On February 27, 1839, the Minnesota Territory was created by an act of Congress, with the capital located at St. Paul. At the time, the territory included parts of present-day Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.
5. In 1991, the Soviet Union's top amateur hockey team, CSKA Moscow, played a game against a team of NHL All-Stars at the St. Paul Civic Center. The Soviet team won 6-4, in what was considered a major upset at the time. The game was part of a series of exhibitions between the two teams, and was the first time the Soviets had played against an NHL team since the 1980 Winter Olympics "Miracle on Ice" game.
