1. In 1843, the city of Houston was officially incorporated. Originally founded in 1836, Houston quickly grew to become one of the largest cities in Texas and remains a major economic and cultural center today.

2. On February 6, 1862, Confederate forces under General John B. Magruder successfully defended Galveston from Union forces commanded by General David G. Farragut. The battle, known as the Battle of Galveston, was a significant victory for the Confederacy during the American Civil War.

3. In 1895, the Texas Medical Association was founded in Galveston. The organization has since grown to become the largest medical association in the state, representing over 53,000 physicians and medical students.

4. On February 6, 1924, musician Bill Haley was born in Highland Park, Michigan. Haley is best known as the bandleader and guitarist for Bill Haley & His Comets, who popularized rock and roll music in the 1950s with hits such as "Rock Around the Clock" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll."

5. In 1952, Texas Senator Lyndon B. Johnson announced his decision to run for re-election. Johnson, who would later become President of the United States, served in the Senate from 1949 to 1961 and was a powerful figure in Texas and national politics.
