1. In 1788, the Virginia legislature authorized the creation of the town of Clarksburg in what is now West Virginia. The town was named after George Rogers Clark, a Revolutionary War hero.
2. On February 6, 1863, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and his troops raided the town of Hartsville, West Virginia. The raid was part of Morgan's larger effort to disrupt Union supply lines in the region.
3. In 1909, the first West Virginia state capitol building was destroyed by fire. The building had been completed just six years earlier, in 1905. The fire was believed to have been caused by faulty wiring.
4. On February 6, 1960, West Virginia Senator Robert C. Byrd launched a filibuster against the Civil Rights Act of 1960. Byrd spoke for more than 14 hours, the longest filibuster ever delivered by a single senator. The act eventually passed later that year.
5. In 2010, a major snowstorm hit West Virginia, bringing up to three feet of snow in some areas. The storm caused widespread power outages and travel disruptions, and was declared a federal disaster by President Barack Obama.
