3. In 1944, Pocatello native and future astronaut William Pogue was born. Pogue went on to serve as a pilot in the United States Air Force and was selected as a member of the astronaut corps in NASA's fifth group of astronauts in 1966.

4. In 1974, the National Forest System received a new addition with the creation of the Sawtooth Wilderness in central Idaho. The wilderness area covers over 217,000 acres and is named for the rugged Sawtooth Mountains that dominate the region.

5. In 2005, the Idaho Supreme Court struck down a state statute banning same-sex marriage, paving the way for legal recognition of same-sex marriages in the state. This decision was seen as a major victory for LGBTQ rights in Idaho and across the country.
