1. On January 10, 1842, the first train robbery in the United States occurred in Marion, Illinois. The robbers, who were from a notorious gang, made off with over $10,000 in cash and goods.

2. In 1901, a major fire broke out in downtown Danville, Illinois, destroying several blocks of the city. Despite the damage, the community rebounded quickly and rebuilt many of the structures that were lost.

3. On January 10, 1963, the Illinois State Police conducted a raid on the home of notorious gangster Sam Giancana in Oak Park. The raid resulted in the seizure of numerous firearms and gambling paraphernalia, but Giancana himself was not present at the time.

4. In 2014, the polar vortex brought extremely cold temperatures to much of the state, with some areas experiencing wind chills as low as -50 degrees Fahrenheit. Schools and businesses were forced to close, and many residents were forced to hunker down and wait out the storm.

5. On January 10, 2020, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a bill legalizing recreational marijuana in the state. Illinois became the 11th state in the country to legalize cannabis for adult use.
