2. On January 14, 1912, Arizona officially became the 48th state to join the Union. The state's admission followed a long and contentious struggle that began in the 1860s when Arizona was originally part of the New Mexico Territory.

3. In 1989, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck the Tucson area, causing widespread damage to homes and buildings. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, and the city was able to recover quickly thanks to a strong community response.

4. On January 14, 1931, William Boeing visited Phoenix to establish a contract with the Hughes Aircraft Company. As a result of the agreement, Boeing was able to use Hughes' wind tunnel to design and test new aircraft, which helped to advance aviation technology.

5. In 1946, the Arizona State Prison Complex in Florence opened its doors to the first group of inmates. The prison, which is still in operation today, is one of the largest and most secure correctional facilities in the state, housing over 4,000 inmates.
