2. On January 16, 1847, the Iowa State Register was established in Iowa City, becoming the state's first newspaper. The paper covered political events, local news, and even published a recipe or two.

3. In 2001, the Iowa State Cyclones basketball team defeated the Michigan Wolverines in a thrilling upset, earning their first victory over a Big Ten team since 1993. The Cyclones went on to have a successful season, finishing with a 25-6 record.

4. On January 16, 1920, the prohibition of alcohol went into effect in the United States. Iowa had already established its own state prohibition two years prior. However, this led to an increase in illegal bootlegging and speakeasies throughout the state.

5. In 1979, Iowa Governor Robert Ray declared a state of emergency due to a historic blizzard that hit the state. Dubbed the "Blizzard of '79," it paralyzed the Midwest for several days and resulted in numerous deaths and damages. The National Guard was called in to assist with rescue and relief efforts.
