1. In 1846, the Maryland Historical Society was founded in Baltimore. It is the oldest continuously operating cultural institution in the state.
2. On January 16, 1920, Maryland ratified the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibited the manufacturing, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. The amendment was later repealed in 1933 by the 21st Amendment.
3. In 1963, the first class of the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Physician Assistant program graduated. The program was the first of its kind in the country and has since become a model for other programs nationwide.
