1. On January 18, 1861, the Idaho Territory was established by the U.S. Congress. The new territory was created from the eastern part of the Washington Territory.

2. In 1937, Idaho achieved a major milestone in aviation history when Northwest Airlines completed the first transcontinental passenger flight from New York to Seattle. The flight made a stop in Boise on January 18 and was greeted by a large crowd of Idahoans.

3. On January 18, 196 Gutzon Borglum was chosen to create the sculpture of four U.S. presidents on the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota. Borglum was a native of Idaho and had previously worked on the Confederate Memorial Carving in Georgia.

4. In 1985, the Boise State football team achieved a historic victory over the University of Miami in the Fiesta Bowl. Known as the "Miracle on the Blue," the game is credited with helping to establish Boise State as a national football power.

5. On January 18, 2001, Idaho police officers arrested a man who had stolen a llama from a farm outside of Boise. The bizarre incident made national headlines and led to the llama, named Dolly, becoming a local celebrity.
