The Assembly met for the first time on January 21, 1816, in a crude kitchen in the tailor's shop of Dennis Pennington, who also served as the first speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives.

2. On January 21, 1826, the first railroad in Indiana, the Madison and Indianapolis Railroad, was incorporated. The railroad, which connected the state capital of Indianapolis with the Ohio River city of Madison, played a crucial role in the development of Indiana's transportation infrastructure.

3. In 1859, the first woman to be elected to a statewide office in Indiana, Myra Bradwell, was admitted to the bar. 4. On January 21, 1946, the Indiana Hoosiers defeated the Michigan Wolverines 45-26 in a college basketball game. The Hoosiers, who were led by future Hall of Famer Branch McCracken, went on to win the NCAA championship that year, their second national title in school history.

5. On January 21, 1977, President Jimmy Carter signed a bill creating the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The 15,000-acre park, which stretches for 15 miles along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, is home to some of the most diverse ecosystems in the Midwest, including forests, wetlands, and sand dunes.
