1. In 1879, the Idaho Territorial Legislature passed an act to establish the University of Idaho in Moscow. This marked the beginning of higher education in the state.

2. In 1901, the first automobile was driven through Idaho. Dr. Harlan P. Ritchie drove a Locomobile from Spokane, Washington to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho in six hours.

3. In 1913, the Idaho State Capitol building was dedicated on January 22. The building was constructed at a cost of $2 million and features neoclassical architecture.

4. In 1943, the Sundance Ski Resort in Ketchum, Idaho opened. It was the first ski resort in the state and is still popular today.

5. In 1996, a blizzard hit southeast Idaho on January 22 and caused a 147-vehicle pileup on Interstate 84 near Pocatello. The accident resulted in two deaths and over 200 injuries.
