3. On January 24, 1942, the U.S. Army activated the 243rd Coast Artillery Regiment in Rhode Island in response to the growing threat of World War II. The regiment was charged with defending the state's coastline and ports from potential attack.

4. In 2003, Rhode Island native Peter Farrelly won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for "Green Book," which he co-wrote with Brian Hayes Currie and Nick Vallelonga.
