1. In 1855, the Portland Co. Locomotive Works in Portland, Maine completed its first locomotive, which was known as the "Forest City". This locomotive was the first of many to be manufactured by the Portland Co. Locomotive Works, which played a key role in the development of the American railroad industry.

2. On January 25, 1939, the iconic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp at Schoodic Lake in Maine was opened. The CCC was a New Deal program that provided employment to young men during the Great Depression, and particular attention was paid to conservation efforts.

3. In 1993, the Maine State House in Augusta was damaged in a fire caused by faulty electrical wiring. The fire caused millions of dollars in damage but thankfully nobody was injured.

4. On January 25, 2011, the Supreme Judicial Court of Maine refused to throw out a $21.6 million verdict against the chemical company, Wyeth. The company was accused of hiding the dangers of its diet drug, Fen-Phen, which had caused serious heart damage in several patients.

5. In 1827, the Maine Temperance Society was established in Portland, Maine. This was one of the earliest temperance organizations in America and played a key role in the national movement to limit alcohol consumption. The society was founded by a group of prominent citizens who were concerned about the social and economic effects of heavy drinking.
