1. On January 26, 1788, New Hampshire became the ninth state to ratify the United States Constitution, helping to bring it into effect. Today, the state celebrates this historic occasion with “Constitution Day”, which recognizes the important role New Hampshire played in creating the document that shapes our government.

2. On January 26, 1838, a massive snow storm hit New Hampshire, dumping up to five feet of snow across the state in just 24 hours. The storm created a state of emergency, with trains and telegraph lines shut down and people stranded in their homes. This historic event is known as the “Great Snow Storm”.

3. January 26, 1869 marked the opening of the first railroad line from Boston to Montreal, which passed through New Hampshire. The line was known as the “Montreal and Boston Air-Line Railway” and changed the way people and goods moved across New England.

4. In 1915, on January 26, the first Woman Suffrage Parade was held in New Hampshire, as more than a thousand women marched through the streets of Concord, demanding the right to vote. This event marked an important step in the fight for women’s suffrage, as the 19th Amendment would not be ratified until five years later.

5. On January 26, 1972, the iconic Old Man of the Mountain rock formation in New Hampshire’s White Mountains collapsed, after years of erosion and weathering. The formation had been a beloved symbol of New Hampshire, appearing on everything from the state quarter to road signs, and its collapse was a sad day for the whole state.
