3. On January 26, 1886, the town of Seneca in Grant County was destroyed by a devastating fire. The fire started in a lodging house and quickly spread to other buildings in the town. Despite the efforts of the local fire department, the entire town was destroyed.
4. The Oregon State Penitentiary, located in Salem, opened on January 26, 1866. The prison housed both male and female inmates, and was the only prison in the state until the Oregon State Correctional Institution was established in 1959.
