1. Wisconsin became a state on January 26, 1848. This happened after a lengthy process involving Congress and the approval of a state constitution. Wisconsin was the 30th state to join the Union.

2. On January 26, 1911, the first direct primary election was held in Wisconsin. This was an important step in giving ordinary voters more say in the selection of political candidates.

5. On January 26, 1905, a shooting took place at the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison. Frank Lloyd was a former state senator who had been expelled from the legislature for corruption. He returned to the Capitol building and shot and killed the current state senator, Robert Schilling, before being captured by police. This incident remains one of the most notorious acts of violence in Wisconsin history.
