1. On January 28, 1958, the Mackinac Bridge Authority was created. The Mackinac Bridge, which connects Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas, is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world.

2. In 1960, on January 28th, the Detroit Pistons became the first NBA team to play a game on a Sunday. The Pistons lost to the New York Knicks, 102-92.

3. The Michigan State Capitol building was completed on January 28, 1879. The impressive building is located in downtown Lansing, and was designed by architect Elijah E. Myers.

4. On January 28, 1942, the United States Army established the Michigan Military Reservation. The reservation, which is now called the Fort Custer Training Center, is located near Battle Creek, Michigan.

5. January 28, 1972, was the final day of operation for the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad. The railroad had been in operation for more than 70 years, and provided transportation for passengers and freight throughout Michigan and Indiana.
