1. Nebraska became a state on March 1, 1867, but it wasn't until January 28, 1916, that the state legislature adopted the current design of the Nebraska state flag. The flag features the state seal surrounded by a goldenrod-yellow field with the state motto, "Equality before the law," written in blue.

2. On January 28, 1925, the Nebraska State Capitol building was completed and dedicated. The capitol, located in Lincoln, is a 15-story Art Deco style structure that was designed by architect Bertram Goodhue. The capitol's tower is topped with a bronze statue of "The Sower" that represents Nebraska's agricultural heritage.

3. In 1962, Nebraska's own astronaut, Clayton Anderson, was born on January 28 in Ashland. Anderson became a NASA astronaut in 1998 and flew on two space shuttle missions, spending a total of 167 days in space. He retired from NASA in 2013.

4. On January 28, 1986, Nebraska native Michael J. Smith was among the seven crew members killed in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. Smith grew up in Bealsville and went on to attend the United States Naval Academy before becoming a NASA astronaut in 1980.

5. The Multiple Sclerosis Society's Nebraska Chapter was founded on January 28, 1952. The organization works to support those affected by multiple sclerosis, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, in Nebraska through education, advocacy, and research funding.
