1. In 1846, the Oregon Territorial Legislature officially established Yamhill County, which is located about 35 miles southwest of Portland. The county was named after the Yamhill River, which runs through the area.

2. On January 28, 1920, Oregon ratified the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote. Oregon became the 25th state to ratify the amendment, which was ultimately adopted nationwide on August 18, 1920.

3. In 1958, a severe winter storm hit Oregon and much of the Pacific Northwest, causing widespread damage and leaving thousands of people without power. The storm, which was known as the "Big Blow," lasted for several days and resulted in more than $25 million in damages.

4. On January 28, 1975, the Cascade Volcanoes Wilderness Study Act was signed into law, which established a wilderness area in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon. The area covers more than 700,000 acres and includes some of the most iconic mountain peaks in the state, such as Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson.

5. In 1993, the Oregon State Capitol in Salem was heavily damaged in a fire that was later determined to be the result of arson. The fire destroyed much of the capitol building's interior and caused millions of dollars in damages. Despite the damage, the building was eventually restored and reopened in 2002.
