1. On January 29, 1863, the first official military communication was sent from Honolulu to San Francisco to request military supplies for the Kingdom of Hawaii. This marked the beginning of Hawaii's military relationship with the United States.

2. In 1891, Queen Liliuokalani was inaugurated as the first and only queen regnant of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Her reign would be short-lived, as she was overthrown by American businessmen in 1893.

3. On January 29, 1895, a group of Hawaiian nationalists led by Robert Wilcox attempted to overthrow the Republic of Hawaii and restore the monarchy. The rebellion was unsuccessful and resulted in the execution of several of its leaders.

4. In 1971, during the Vietnam War, a B-52 bomber crashed into Mount Kamakou on the island of Molokai, killing all six crew members aboard. The wreckage and the remains of the crew were not discovered until 1992.

5. On January 29, 2002, the first traditional Hawaiian voyaging canoe to circumnavigate the globe in over 600 years, the Hōkūleʻa, returned to Honolulu after a three-year, 47,000-mile journey. The canoe served as an ambassador of Hawaiian culture and sustainability, and its voyage inspired a new generation of navigators and ocean conservationists.
