1. In 1959, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel project began construction. The 17.6-mile-long structure connects Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, passing through Maryland's portion of the Chesapeake Bay.

2. On January 3, 1973, the Baltimore Bullets played their final home game before moving to Landover, Maryland, becoming the Capital Bullets and eventually the Washington Wizards.

3. In 1777, American General George Washington led his army to victory against the British in the Battle of Princeton. Although the battle took place in New Jersey, many soldiers from Maryland fought under Washington's command.

4. On January 3, 1947, Maryland's first woman judge, Mary Ellen Barbera, was born in Baltimore. She went on to become the Chief Judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals in 2013, the highest court in the state.

5. The first edition of The Baltimore Sun was published on January 3, 1837. The newspaper, which remains in circulation today, was founded by journalist Arunah Shepherdson Abell and has won numerous Pulitzer Prizes throughout its history.
