1. In 1941, the state of Rhode Island approves a plan to build a new capitol building. The current building, located in Providence, was completed in 1904, but deemed inadequate due to its small size and outdated infrastructure.

2. In 1777, during the American Revolution, British forces under the command of General Henry Clinton land in Newport, Rhode Island, marking the start of a seven-month occupation of the city. The occupation did not end until American and French forces forced the British to evacuate in July 1778.

3. On January 3, 1888, a severe blizzard hits Rhode Island, causing extensive damage and numerous deaths. The storm, which lasted for two days, deposited up to 50 inches of snow in some areas, and caused widespread transportation disruptions and power outages.

4. In 1973, former Rhode Island governor and convicted felon Edward DiPrete takes office for his first term as governor. DiPrete served two terms as governor, from 1973 to 1985, before being indicted on corruption charges in 1992.

5. On January 3, 2019, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo is inaugurated for her second term in office. Raimondo, a Democrat, has prioritized economic development and education reform during her tenure as governor, and has been a vocal advocate for renewable energy and combating climate change.
