1. In 1912, Arizona became the 48th state in the United States of America. The capital city of Phoenix hosted the first state capital building in the same year.

2. In 1943, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium at Arizona State University in Tempe was dedicated. The auditorium is named after Grady Gammage, a lawyer and friend of Wright.

3. In 1980, the first ever Fiesta Bowl was held at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe. The game saw Penn State defeat Arizona State University 31-19.

4. In 1991, the Arizona Diamondbacks were officially awarded as the MLB expansion franchise to be based in Arizona. The team would play their first game in 1998.

5. In 2019, Arizona Senator John McCain was posthumously awarded the Arizona Heritage Award. The award recognizes individuals who have "made significant and lasting contributions to Arizona's history and culture."
