4. In 1941, James E. Clyburn, a prominent South Carolina politician and civil rights activist, was born in Sumter, South Carolina. Clyburn served in the South Carolina House of Representatives and the United States House of Representatives, where he became the highest-ranking African American congressman.

5. In 1958, the first medical college in South Carolina, the Medical University of South Carolina, opened its doors in Charleston. Today, the university is a leading research institution and one of the top medical schools in the country.
