1. In 1865, General William T. Sherman's forces entered the town of Columbia, South Carolina, during the Civil War. The Union army burned much of the city, causing significant damage and leaving more than two-thirds of the city's residents homeless.

2. In 1872, John D. Long, who later served as the Secretary of the Navy under President William McKinley, was born in Buckfield, Maine. Long attended Harvard University and eventually moved to South Carolina, where he practiced law and served in the state legislature.

3. In 1915, South Carolina's first state park, Table Rock, was established. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the park features several hiking trails, a campground, and stunning views of Table Rock Mountain.

4. In 1941, James E. Clyburn, a prominent South Carolina politician and civil rights activist, was born in Sumter, South Carolina. Clyburn served in the South Carolina House of Representatives and the United States House of Representatives, where he became the highest-ranking African American congressman.

5. In 1958, the first medical college in South Carolina, the Medical University of South Carolina, opened its doors in Charleston. Today, the university is a leading research institution and one of the top medical schools in the country.
