1. On January 4, 1875, the Hartford Electric Light Company was incorporated in Connecticut. This company was one of the first companies in the United States to produce electric lights for commercial use.

2. In 1961, Connecticut’s population hit a record high of approximately 2.7 million people. This was the largest number of residents the state had ever had at that time.

3. January 4, 1949, marked the opening of the Connecticut General Assembly’s session. During this session, the state’s legislators passed a bill that outlawed the death penalty. However, the law was later repealed in 1976.

4. On January 4, 1900, the Connecticut Agricultural College, which is now known as the University of Connecticut (UConn), officially opened its doors. Today, UConn is one of the most respected public research universities in the United States.

5. In 1933, Governor Wilbur L. Cross delivered his famous “Time and the Town” speech at the dedication ceremony of the Fairfield Country Day School. This speech, which reflected on the importance of community and the passage of time, remains one of the most famous speeches in Connecticut history.
