1. In 1881, the first issue of the Atchison Daily Globe newspaper was printed in Atchison, Kansas. This newspaper is still in operation today and is now known as the Atchison Globe.

2. In 1896, the first ever intercollegiate basketball game in Kansas was played between Baker University and Kansas State Agricultural College (now Kansas State University). Baker University won the game 20-19.

3. On January 4, 1912, construction began on the iconic Carnegie Library building in Lawrence, Kansas. The building was completed later that same year and served as the city's main library until 1972.

4. In 1954, the Topeka Board of Education filed a lawsuit that would ultimately lead to the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision. The case challenged racial segregation in public schools and helped to pave the way for desegregation throughout the United States.

5. On January 4, 1995, the Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the Miami Dolphins in the AFC Divisional Playoffs. The game became known as the "Joe Montana game" as the Chiefs quarterback led the team to a dramatic come-from-behind victory in the fourth quarter.
