1. In 1941, the Timberline Lodge, located on Mount Hood, officially opened to the public. It was built as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) program during the Great Depression and has since become a popular tourist destination and ski resort.

2. On January 4, 1855, the Willamette Valley Treaty was signed between the United States government and Native American tribes. The treaty established reservations for the tribes and allowed for the government to purchase much of the tribal lands in Oregon.

3. The Oregon State Capitol building was completed on January 4, 1938. The building features an Art Deco style and is the third capitol building to stand on the same site. It houses the offices of the Governor, the State Treasurer, and the Secretary of State, among other government offices.

4. On January 4, 2002, Portland was hit by a severe ice storm that caused widespread power outages and damage to trees and buildings. The storm lasted for four days and left nearly 350,000 people without power.

5. In 1992, Oregon became the first U.S. state to legalize physician-assisted suicide with the passage of the Death with Dignity Act. The law allows residents who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness to request a lethal prescription from their doctor.
