1. The Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility opened in 1871 in Cañon City. It was the first prison in Colorado and is still operating today.

2. In 1914, the Gunnison River flooded in Western Colorado, causing extensive damage to several towns and killing nine people.

3. On January 5, 1935, the City and County of Denver officially opened the newly-built Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Today, it is one of the most iconic concert venues in the world.

4. The Coltivare Farm opened in Boulder on January 5, 2014. It was the first ever rooftop farm-to-table restaurant in Colorado.

5. In 2020, the National Western Stock Show opened for its 114th year on January 5. However, due to COVID-19 concerns, the 2021 show was canceled for the first time in its history.
