1. In 1922, the first commercial flight from Albuquerque to Santa Fe took place on January 7th. This flight was operated by the company Western Air Express, which later became known as Delta Air Lines.

2. On January 7th, 1931, the New Mexico State Capitol building was dedicated in Santa Fe. The building was designed by architect Herbert Maier and was completed in just over a year.

3. In 1963, the New Mexico State University Library in Las Cruces was destroyed by fire on January 7th. The library contained over 300,000 volumes, including rare books and manuscripts. The cause of the fire was never determined.

4. On January 7th, 1983, the first medical helicopter flight in New Mexico took place. The flight transported a patient from Roswell to Albuquerque in just 50 minutes, a journey that would have taken up to six hours by ground ambulance.

5. In 2019, a group of New Mexico lawmakers started the new year by taking part in a polar bear plunge on January 7th. The group braved the chilly waters of the Santa Fe River to raise money for Special Olympics New Mexico.
