1. On July 11, 1804, Alexander McGillivray, a Creek Indian leader and diplomat, died in Pensacola, Florida. McGillivray was born in Alabama and played a significant role in the negotiations between the Creek Nation and the United States government.

2. The city of Birmingham, Alabama was incorporated on July 11, 1871. The city was established as a result of the discovery of significant iron ore deposits in the area.

3. On July 11, 1914, the first-ever air mail route in the United States was established between New York City and Washington, D.C. The route included a stop in Montgomery, Alabama.

4. In 1960, on July 11, the first African American students were admitted to the University of Alabama. Vivian Malone and James Hood were the first two students to enroll, and their admittance was met with resistance from Alabama Governor George Wallace.

5. On July 11, 1979, the Miss Alabama beauty pageant was won by Barbara Webster. Webster went on to represent Alabama in the Miss America pageant that year and placed in the top ten. She later became an educator and was inducted into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame in 2005.
