1. In 1780, the Battle of Williamson's Plantation took place in what is now Richburg, South Carolina during the American Revolutionary War. Patriots led by William Bratton defeated a group of Loyalists, helping to secure the state for the Continental Army.
2. In 1863, Confederate troops under General James Longstreet attempted to capture the city of Charleston during the Civil War by assaulting Fort Wagner on Morris Island. The battle lasted more than six weeks and resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, but the fort remained under Union control.
3. In 1948, African American baseball player Larry Doby broke the color barrier in the American League by joining the Cleveland Indians. Doby, who grew up in Camden, South Carolina, went on to become a Hall of Fame player and coach.
4. In 1960, the first successful launch of an American Polaris submarine missile took place off the coast of Charleston. The missile was fired from the USS George Washington and traveled more than 1,000 miles before hitting its target.
5. In 2015, nine African American worshipers were killed by a white supremacist during a shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston. The tragedy sparked a national conversation about race and gun violence, and led to the removal of several Confederate symbols from public spaces in South Carolina.
