On July 14, 1846, President James K. Polk signed a bill officially admitting Iowa as the 29th state in the United States. Prior to statehood, Iowa had been part of the Iowa Territory, which was established in 1838.

On July 14, 1933, infamous criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were captured by law enforcement in Dexfield Park, Iowa. The couple had been on a crime spree, robbing banks and killing law enforcement officers, since 1932.

On July 14, 1958, the Iowa State Fair set a new attendance record with over 132,000 visitors. The fair has been a beloved tradition in Iowa since its first iteration in 1854 and continues to draw large crowds today.

5. July 14, 1981: Iowa native Jocelyn Elders appointed as U.S. Deputy Surgeon General
On July 14, 1981, Jocelyn Elders, a native of Schaal, Arkansas who had spent much of her professional career in Iowa, was appointed as the U.S. Deputy Surgeon General under President Ronald Reagan. Elders went on to become the first African American woman to serve as Surgeon General of the United States under President Bill Clinton in 1993.
