3. On July 15, 1870, Governor Robert K. Scott signed a bill establishing Clemson University. The university was originally known as the Clemson Agricultural College of South Carolina and was founded to promote agricultural education in the state.

4. The USS South Carolina, a battleship commissioned in 1908, was launched on July 15 of that same year. The ship was the first in the United States Navy to be named after the state and was decommissioned in 1921.
