1. In 1730, Spanish pirates attacked and looted the settlement of Port Royal on present-day Hilton Head Island. The pirates killed several people, destroyed homes and businesses, and carried off enslaved individuals. This event marked one of the earliest recorded incidents of piracy in South Carolina history.

2. On July 17, 1775, the Sons of Liberty captured Fort Johnson near Charleston during the American Revolution. The fort was a key British stronghold, but the patriots were able to take control without firing a single shot. This early victory inspired more support for the American cause in the South.

3. In 1821, the first steamship to navigate the Santee River arrived in Georgetown, South Carolina. The steamship brought goods and passengers from Charleston, revolutionizing transportation and commerce in the region. The Santee River became a major transportation route for cotton and other goods, and Georgetown became a thriving port city.

4. On July 17, 1863, Confederate troops under General James Longstreet attacked Union forces at the Battle of Honey Hill in Beaufort County. Despite outnumbering the Union troops, Longstreet's forces were unable to defeat them and suffered heavy casualties. This battle was part of the larger Charleston Campaign during the Civil War.

5. In 1914, the first commercial flight in South Carolina history took place, between Charleston and New York City. The flight was operated by the Benoist Airboat Company and took nine hours to complete, with stops in Savannah, Georgia and Raleigh, North Carolina. This marked a significant milestone in the history of aviation and paved the way for future air travel in South Carolina.
