1. In 1821, the famed Texan rebel, Sam Houston, was appointed as the headmaster of a school in Arkansas that was established by the Quapaw Indians.

2. July 17, 1836 marked the creation of the Texas Navy. During the Texas Revolution, the navy was instrumental in protecting the Texas coastline and helping to transport soldiers and supplies.

3. In 1955, a tornado swept through the town of Olney, Texas. The town was left devastated, with many buildings and homes destroyed. However, the community pulled together to rebuild and recover.

4. The Dallas Museum of Art opened its doors on July 17, 1903, featuring a collection of over 1,000 works of art from around the world.

5. In 1987, a massive fire swept through the First National Bank building in downtown Dallas. The fire is considered to be one of the largest in Texas history, and caused approximately $200 million in damages. Despite the destruction, the building was eventually restored and has since become an iconic landmark in the city.
