1. In 1863, the Lawrence Massacre occurred in Lawrence, Kansas. Confederate guerrillas led by William Clarke Quantrill attacked the town and killed over 150 men and boys.

2. In 1895, the famous Dalton Gang robbed two banks in Coffeyville, Kansas. The gang was eventually caught and several members were killed in a shootout with law enforcement.

3. In 1908, a devastating tornado struck the town of Pleasant Hill, Kansas. The tornado killed 18 people and caused extensive damage to the town.

4. In 1960, the first Pizza Hut restaurant opened in Wichita, Kansas. The chain has since expanded to over 18,000 locations worldwide.

5. In 1996, the Olympic torch relay passed through Kansas on its way to Atlanta, Georgia for the Summer Olympics. The relay covered over 15,000 miles across the United States.
